SoCal boat rockfish still stuck inside 50 fathoms through Sept. 30

Southern California rockfish boats are still on the summer depth fence. CDFW’s Summary of Recreational Groundfish Fishing Regulations (updated June 23, 2026) keeps the Southern Management Area — Point Conception to the U.S.–Mexico border — on a July 1–Sept. 30 “50 fathom, inshore only” rule for nearshore rockfish, cabezon, greenlings, shelf/slope rockfish, and lingcod.

That means take is prohibited seaward of the 50-fathom (300-foot) Rockfish Conservation Area waypoint line in federal regs. Shore-based anglers and spear divers stay exempt from those season/depth limits under the usual CCR provisions, but boat crews need a descending device aboard whenever they take or possess federal groundfish.

No retention anytime statewide for bronzespotted, cowcod, quillback, or yelloweye rockfish. Northern, Mendocino, San Francisco, and Central management areas remain open at all depths April–December under the current summary — the tight summer fence is a SoCal story.
