Kenai Silver Salmon Derby canceled for 2026

Kenai’s Chamber-run Silver Salmon Derby is sitting out 2026. The Kenai Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center announced the cancellation Aug. 27, saying there was not enough reliable in-season information on the Kenai River coho return to run a harvest-based derby. Homer News reported the decision Sept. 4.

Organizers framed it as a precaution consistent with the event’s “World’s Most Responsible Fishing Derby” conservation pitch. The cancellation is of their derby only — not a statewide coho shutdown. The same day, ADF&G kept the Kenai River bag and possession at two coho 16 inches or longer through Nov. 30 instead of the usual September bump to three (that emergency order is already on this desk).

The derby scores a random “magic weight” among qualifying fish over 4 pounds, not a biggest-fish payout. Kenai City Council discussed the cancellation Sept. 2. Organizers are looking at 2027 and may try moving the event into August. Late-run Kenai kings were already closed this summer, and sockeye ran softer than locals wanted — more context for why a coho derby felt like a bad bet.
