Delta punch bite still runs the mats as late-summer heat holds

Late-summer heat has not shut the California Delta down. Bass Angler Magazine’s Sept. 8, 2026 playbook says largemouth are still living in the mats: the bite that is producing is a punch rig on hydrilla, pennywort, and other heavy vegetation once the sun is up and water sits in the mid-to-upper 70s.

The magazine’s field notes put current first. A running tide along a clean mat edge is when punch baits and reaction lures get bit; slack water is when fish slide back under cover and a weightless worm or drop-shot along the outside grass line starts to out-fish a heavy punch. Topwater still has a job, but the window is shrinking to first and last usable light.

Treat a stretch of grass as a tide shift, not a one-and-done spot. Re-fish the same seams on a different stage instead of writing them off after a slow first pass, and confirm current Delta black bass bag and size rules before you keep fish.
